The Rainbow Textbook (2-year textbook)
[Rain Yr 1]
$85.00

Give your student an understanding of the core principles of science without boring him to tears. This textbook is the centerpiece of an outstanding, award-winning curriculum for junior high students. No more senseless hopping from one subject to another. This concise text will lay out all the sciences in a two-year logical progression. No more reading reams of droning information only to find that the student can’t retain the concepts. Students will love this conversational, humorous, yet concise and technically-sound work. The work is done in an entertaining and light-hearted style that will keep students minds glued to the daily concepts.

This concept-oriented book involves a brief, daily reading two days a week. The readings are accentuated with colorful photographs and illustrations for reinforcement. Each lesson is followed by exercises to test the students reception and comprehension of the day’s concept. A third day in the week is used to demonstrate the principles through hands-on laboratory activities in the Home Laboratory workbook.

Compare the quality of this fine textbook with any on the market! It is made up of 347 pages of beautiful four-color-process (that is, full-color) print on fine, coated paper that makes the color come to life. The book is indexed and the different disciplines are making up the sections are color coded. The book’s UV-coated cover protects its soft cover from soiling and moisture. The soft, perfect binding was chosen by a customer focus group because of its ability to lay open, flat on a tabletop and because of the protection the UV coating give to the book. There is full-color photography and illustration on every page.

Logical progression

A rainbow is made up of continuous wavelengths of light that can be described as a series of colors marked by three major, “primary” colors. Similarly, science is made up of a continuum of thought that can be conveniently divided into three major disciplines—physics, chemistry and biology. Although we were never taught it in our educational process, the sciences are not actually individual and separate disciplines, but interlinking, overlapping and logically connected bodies of knowledge/practice.

Physics is the most fundamental science. It is where we learn about nature’s fundamentals—matter, the four basic forces, energy.

An understanding of the operations of chemistry will require a background in physics. Chemicals are made up of matter. They do what they do because of the physical forces that drive them. When they do so they absorb and release energy.

Living things—the subject of biology—are composed of chemicals. Every physical activity of a living thing takes place because of chemical reactions that drive it. Therefore, to understand functional biology is to understand chemistry.

These major disciplines are connected by minor ones. Physics is connected to Physical Chemistry, which is connected to Chemistry which is connected to Biochemistry which is connected to Biology. This is the basic logical progression of the sciences. Unlike other science courses, ours actually teaches this progression so kids will have an understanding of the overall structure of the sciences. Teaching the sciences without this logical framework is like teaching history without a timeline. No wonder our kids (and our adults) are confused!

Concept orientation

Each day in The Rainbow will be centered around a new concept. The concepts are organized according to the basic logical progression of the sciences. This amounts to a layered approach, such that each day’s concept adds something substantial to the progression. There is only one significant concept added per day, so the amount of text is dictated only by the amount of reasoning necessary to convey and reinforce that concept.

Brevity

Don’t be surprised by the brevity of the text. The lessons are meaty with plenty of abstract concepts and applications to keep the mind at work. Users have commented about their initial reaction of “Is it enough?” and later realizing the wisdom of the concept-driven, layered approach. The result is to build a well-founded science education from ground up.
